2nd Annual Carlson User Conference a Success

Enthusiastic Reception for Juniper Systems, Dewberry, and ESRI Speakers

LEXINGTON, Ky.―  Carlson Software’s 2nd annual User Conference, held April 5-7 in Lexington, Ky., offered expert training to create better designs and enhance efficiency with Carlson’s full project cycle software solutions. These include technology for land surveying, civil engineering, construction (including machine control), and mining.

Bruce Carlson, president and founder of Carlson Software, congratulated all who attended for “persevering” in their businesses and jobs. “What we are about here is real work,” he said. “There has never been a greater need than now for efficient software solutions. This conference is about value,” he added. “In any market, and in this market particularly, the key is value.”

In addition to the full schedule of classes, Carlson illustrated that as a company, it is a “team player” with the variety of speakers at the event. These included representatives from Juniper Systems, Dewberry, designated a top-50 design firm by ENR, and ESRI, which designs the world’s leading geographic information system (GIS) technology.

Rob Campbell, president and CEO of Juniper Systems, described the components that went into the Carlson Surveyor and Carlson Surveyor+, the data collectors the 28-year-old company helped design with Carlson and now manufactures for them.

“Now is the time to plant the seeds for learning and expanding,” said Campbell, “so that companies or individuals will have the edge for when the market comes back. And it will come back,” he added.

David Palumbo, PE, Technology Manager for Infrastructure Services at Dewberry, which has 40 locations in 18 states, started his presentation by saying, “Carlson works for us.” He recounted how it took two years to evaluate three competing solutions and that Carlson’s Civil Suite, which includes, Carlson Civil, Carlson Survey, Carlson Hydrology, and Carlson GIS, was chosen as “best aligning with Dewberry’s desired work flow and site-civil technologies.”

“We are achieving our original goals, it is highly cost effective,” he said, “people are doing better work. and I think they are also having fun.”

Brent Jones, PE, PLS, wrapped up the presentations by noting that ESRI is planning to work with Carlson and “help surveyors leverage their existing resources to help in the GIS market.” Noting that GIS changes the whole domain for surveyors, Jones said, “The idea is to do new things – break new ground. Engaging in the infrastructure and asset management communities are real opportunities for surveyors.”

ESRI and Carlson Software are poised to work more closely together, with ESRI for the GIS and Carlson SurvCE, Carlson Survey and Carlson Civil for the data collection, analysis, and design applications.

“This cooperation will give surveyors and engineers solutions for the entire infrastructure lifecycle,” added Carlson. “Providing across-the-board, non-proprietary solutions for the full project cycle is what Carlson Software is all about.”
